Scoring: MP

1* - (3**) - ?

* 10-14, 5 card majors
** Weak jump overcall

What is your call playing limited openings as above?

What would your call be playing standard 5 card majors (as in SAYC or 2/1)?

In both cases I pass and wait for a reopening double.

If you pass and wait for the reopening double, what is then your call after:

1 - (3) - P - (P)
X - (P) - ?

4 in both situations.

- too strong for 3
- too much spade strength to be prepared to defend 3 doubled.

FTL

Let's give partner 5143 or 5134 shape ok?
Let's give partner 14 working hcp ok?
13=total tricks
4=combined 2 shortest suits
22-24 combined working hcp =plus one
25-27 combined working hcp =plus two
13-4+1=10 tricks
13-4 +2=11 tricks.

Opp hand= assume 7222 shape and 16-18 working hcp or 13-15 working hcp or 10-12 working hcp.
13-4-(1) or (2) or (3)=8 or 7 or 6 tricks.

LTC=9 loser hand assuming no double fit.
24-9-?
Need partner to have 5 loser hand for game or 6 loser hand with double fit.

Bottom line, if partner can reopen with a supermax double 10-14 hcp I am bidding 4S.

3 in both cases.

After a preempt, you sometimes have to dump competitive and invitational bids in the same basket. I judge this to be one such case.

As a side note, do you have the agreement (as in Meckwell) that you reopen on any hand with shortness in opps suit? Remember that your hand is fairly well defined in terms of hcp. I did not choose to pass and wait for a double, but looking at all the hands, that would have been the auction had I passed.

Pd will strive to re open. He won't reopen with an average hand with length in ther suit. If he would not be prepared to pass a penalty X, - say some 2 suited hand, then he will bid, but not pass.

Scoring: MP

1* - (3**) - 3NT - All Pass

With my 4333 shape and length in hearts, I didn't fancy playing in spades. However, I felt that 3 was probably enough on my cards. The 5-0 break offside is rather unlucky. However, the play in 3NT was rather interesting. The lead was A and another (even though hearts were discourage by East). East played a 3rd heart which I won in hand discarding a spade and diamond from dummy. I then lead the J and West had a hard time finding the killing defense of rising with A and exiting with a diamond. When the diamond Jack held I led a small diamond and West won the Ace. The position was:

Scoring: MP

1* - (3**) - 3NT - All Pass

And West now has to give me all but one of the remaining tricks. I thought an interesting hand. Note 3 makes and the limit of our hands is 2NT. An awkward hand indeed.

That North hand isn't an opening bid.

1) 10 HCP. OK, I can stand opening on 10 counts playing a limited opening system, but a) Aceless :) singleton Q of hearts not likely to be worth very much and c) You don't really want a spade lead if opponents play the hand.

Incidently, I'd bid 3S. Probably the best description of my values
