Deal: https://tinyurl.com/28fb7mys

The bot bids 4 in the round following its takeout double, showing a strong one-suited hand - but it only had a bad 5-card suit and way fewer points than promised.

Obviously not great, but the actual decision to bid is somewhat understandable. It has to bid something - pass can't be correct at IMPs - but all of its bids, including 5, show 18+ points for doubling-then-bidding-again, which is the real problem, and a long standing one.

Finding Hx in hearts is all it really needs for 4 to be fine, so I can see that occasionally coming out on top in a simulation (especially when its system says West will correct back to diamonds with something like a heart void). The second problem is that it "knows" South will never bid 4, and it "knows" a basic robot partner wouldn't raise hearts.. it just doesn't know it isn't playing with a basic robot partner.

Thanks for the explanation!

The robot made a very similar mistake again: https://tinyurl.com/2a5pr73f

This time it had more than enough HCP for its 4 bid, but with a balanced 23 count and a double stop in the opponent's suit, it should bid 3NT, which would have been a much better contract than 4.

Ha, may sound similar, but actually completely unrelated. A direct 3NT is 16-22, and double and 3NT is 25+ (default rule saying partnership must have 25 HCP for game), and in between it's not only told to double and bid a new suit, but *forced* to and told it's not allowed to simulate to see whether an alternative would be better. (At least, in an old version, and given the above I doubt it has changed since). There's lots of gaps like this in the database.
