Another MP session at a bridge club I have just joined in the nearest town and another evening of poor hands. Average HCP 8.27, partner's average HCP 9.53 so the second consecutive large EW hand bias. This hand was the most freakish at our table (I was South):

I got out for -100 due to the fact that I overlooked the fact I should play for a singleton Q and instead started with the 9 which was ducked!! A second diamond crashed the honors so that was only one loser instead of two. Theoretically EW have a choice of three makable slams but only one pair found 6NT. A couple of Souths were doubled off two in 5 and three EW pairs found 4/.

I've never played a hand at the five level on a combined eight count before and it has been nearly three decades since an opposing 20+ point hand was silent after I preempted.

Am I correct that 7 of either major by East makes double dummy (and an expert might even figure it out single dummy after the preempt)?

I thank you for volunteering to hold the bad hands for a session. If it wasn't for people like you, I would have to endure sessions where I averaged less than 11 HCP.

I had a shocking set recently, 20 boards and it took me 18 of them to get as much as a 12 count, finishing 12,16,13 brought it up from an average in the low 7s to the low 8s.

It wasn't quite that bad, but 14 consecutive hands with single digit HCP is tedious. Two biggest hands were a balanced 15 count and a nice 3 suiter 16 count, even on that one the opponent's bought the contract.

The first round I averaged less than 7 points a hand, we got 100% of the matchpoints (only 2.5 tables so one comparison).

I find evenings with that level of attendance a waste of an evening, not enjoyable at all. At least where I play now there are double figure table numbers so there is some field protection, such as one hand we were defending which needed the lead of Q from Qx in a suit partner had not bid and where partner is marked with little strength to get them down, any other lead they make ten or 11 tricks. Somehow two pairs found that opening lead.
