Both side non-vul.

1S, pass, 4S, dbl
pass, ?

How do most advanced players interpret the dbl? Takeout, penalty, DSI, other.
Thanks,

Takeout is pretty normal on a fit auction like this.

Over a 4 opening I think it’s less clear though; some play takeout here too while others play just values and leave partner to decide what to do.

Values, distributed strength.
The double gets rarely pulled, trying for a 11 trick contract is a lot.

It would be a more interesting question, if you make it hearts.
With kind regards

I think the majority of intermediate and advanced players will interpret this as DSI/values. I think takeout is a superior agreement.
I'm not sure the difference between the two at the 5-level is common knowledge.

T/O but sufficentlt strong defensive values to stand the pass from partner who will rarely contract for 11 tricks unless very shapely (fear that our tricks in their long suits get ruffed) or strong enough to think they can make something.

So I would run to 5C with xx xx Qxx Kxxxxx (could be a good save, esp green, and at IMPs going -1 vs 4S-1 is no disaster) or move on with Axx Kxxx x QJxxx (with the firm intention of making, esp red, 4NT to check the best suit, partner does not necessarily have 4H).

Same reasoning over 4H but it is convertible to 4S! So with anything that could legitimately think they can make 4S knowing you are strong, it is likely to be pulled out. I would try my chance with QJxx xx KJxxx xx.
