When options in individual suits are finely balanced, consider how the hand, as a whole, plays should you pursue any of the options on offer.

While there is perhaps a tiny inference that south holds the club queen (he might have led a stiff, so north is slightly less likely to hold Qxxx than is south) that’s a very slender inference. Meanwhile, it’s easy to see that a club to the Jack, if successful, vastly increases our chances of making….if we still go down, then we had zero play ever…we have 2 trump losers and the diamond is offside. Meanwhile a losing finesse reduces our chances but doesn’t eliminate them. Finally, it goes very much against the grain to hook spades at trick 2….unless you believe that south isn’t allowed a stiff Queen, lol.
