Well, I think asking you what you do with the messages you receive is a perfectly valid and well-formulated question. Hardly devoid of sense, I would say

Ok, now I know what you do with them.

Agree. But don't have much time to do it.

I have no problem with having my votes shown in a table. I don't really care if I score 300 or 600 but its fun to see how you stack up against others. Further, there should be a YTD leader as well.

As bridge players we are all competitive by nature anyway. Does the ACBL only show the top half of the field on their recap sheets?

If some don't want their names posted, label them 'anonymous' or let them choose a code name.

I myself don't care much if my name is listed or not. For the three sets of problem, I was not a winner, but above median (I voted too late on 2nd set. would have been above median as well).

For some questions I score low, I still think my choice was the best. So even if I score below median, I wouldn't feel humiliated.

Good point. There is no right and no wrong answer. The votes of the panel (even if unanimous) are not necessarily the truth, merely a view on what that individual judges to be best in the circumstances.

Accordingly, there is nothing humiliating about having a different view from even world class players. You can't prove what would work best at the table with your partner against those opponents.

I'm sure I'll always score below average because my ideas on bidding are often different than mainstream opinions.

I'm sorry to hear that you will not participate, Whereagles, I think your opinions on bidding issues are sound and you could make a positive contribution to the poll.

I always enjoy reading whereeagles opinions, and maybe you can change your mind and still participate. Having said that, whereeagles hasn't exactly struck me as a sound bidder

I suck at defensive play. That's why I bid recklessly, so as to try and play the hand

i don't see that it matters much.. before the results are known, most of us defend our answers... if anyone cared they could always total up someone's score... it wouldn't bother me a bit for my score to be shown

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

Here-in lies one of the problems with bidding polls such as these when viewed as a contest. Credit is given for predicting as much as possible what the majority of the panel will bid and/or say about the hand. Veer to far from that and you lose many points even if your rationale is totally sound or at least makes more sense than the mainstream responses. However, unless I very much misunderstood the reasons for these polls (or "contests"), we are not striving to build the best mouse trap here, but instead trying to establish a wider base of guidelines, commonality or understanding among a greater number of people who will agree to play BBO Basic or Advanced. ( so that there will be fewer gross misunderstandings, frustration, and better results (and happier players  ). These polls are not to prove one person's approach to be the best mouse trap (although I feel that a truly creative and effective suggestion/ method for handling a difficult bidding situation should be recognizied and reinforced.) It's to increase the level of agreement among the greatest number of players at as high a level of quality as possible.

or so I thought

probably wrong again,..oh, well (sigh)

i just want to know why people bid what they bid, to better understand the thought processes that go into judgment calls

Well, ok.. When I'm concentrated my defense is good. But if I'm tired, my 'autopilot' makes defensive mistakes frequently

That may not be the main purpose of the problems, but it sure is the most useful thing one can take out of them.
