Purpose of sudden 6-level bid

♠4 ♥108743 ♦KQJ7 ♣AQ10
Partner had
♠AQ982 ♥QJ6 ♦A ♣K875
The bidding went as follows (I opened): 1♥ (12+ HCP with 5+ hearts) - 1♠ - 2♦ (good diamond suit, no spade fit) - and then North suddenly blasted to 6♥. Of course, for the obvious reasons (missing AK of trumps), it went down 1.
So, why did North bid a slam without further investigating (Blackwood etc), since I didn't promise the strength of my heart suit (opposed to length)? Or maybe I shouldn't open with my long major being not good enough?

Even GIB, the robot everyone loves to hate, bids 3♣, 4sf.
You did nothing wrong.

6H is clearly ridiculous, but the auction is a problematic one. Say North bids 3C and you bid anything other than 3D - how does North set hearts and look for slam now? Here you're going to bid 3NT, and I don't know what GIB's options are at this point.
A partnership needs good agreements to deal with a 4SF bid at the three-level, otherwise the auction may not be much more informative than the one the robot chose.

I'm going to think twice opening a heart suit like that in future

Worth considering suit quality in first or second seat. It sometimes is worth while passing this hand first, although it goes against the grain playing with a real partner1

Playing SAYC while GIB is playing 2/1 should lead to some confusing auctions.

Well, not all of them. I'm actually a programmer and I'm at least trying to play bridge.
