4NT was a quantitative invite, 5 is declining and showing a suit.

Even if this is true, 5D is a second suit. The robot should show preference for hearts.

However, I would really have expected anything apart from pass to be natural and forcing to slam.

5 is just plain undefined. GIB tends to pass if you make a bid that doesn't exist. Yes, it shouldn't, but really, just don't make undefined bids :)

Solid bidding by GIB. Some people would ask how is getting to a 3-2 fit any good. There are much worse suit fits that GIB could have ended up in (although not on this hand). There are plenty of hands where passing 5 would be the right bid so I encourage GIB to keep passing until one of those hands comes up.
