Where is the back button? This is the first time I've used the forum. I click on a message and see that thread but how do I get back to where I was before I clicked on a message.

It doesn't work that way.
But in a browser you can get back using the <- button of the browser.
You can always get back to the list of new content (and mark current topic as read) by pressing "View New Content" at top right.

Or right click on the topic and open the link in a new tab, or a new window.
