I'd like to set up a ten/twelve table tournament for players who have registered who belong to the 4 Clubs I play at.

I'd like to do this either in a morning or lunchtime UK time.

Can I do this, and if so how do I do it? Every time I go into the Club to test it, so I can prepare a help document for the players, I can get the option to set up a tournament (I'm a Prime Member).

You need to be accredited as a TD by BBO. When you are, there is a director button on the right of the screen. If you click on that, there is a button that says "include/exclude list". Click on that and you can enter the usernames for all your members. When you click "close" it will be saved.

You can now click on "create tournament" and set it up as you need and restrict registration to your include list. No one who is not on your include list can now register. You can add to the list after you have created it but, if you already have a tournament created, you need to edit the tournament by adding something like additional welcome for the list to be updated in the tournament.

BBO is not currently providing director privileges, so unless you already have them you will not be able to run a tournament.

If you are affiliated to the EBU, then you can ask them if they can assist.

All our clubs and counties have been sent information about setting up virtual clubs and small clubs are encouraged to join with others for this. So talk to the clubs you want to run the games for.

To run a Virtual Club, you can ask the SABF to make the contact with BBO, so your club (and others affiliated with the SABF) can run such tournaments.

We are a community bridge club for seniors. We would like to set up a free virtual club on BBO so that our members can continue to play bridge.

But we were told BBO is overloaded and would not allow anymore virtual club. BBO advised us to contact big organization like ACBL and let ACBL to set us up.

But to do this, first of all, we have to be members of ACBL which membership costs big money, and then when the virtual club is setup, we have to pay to play.

Our members are on fixed pension, paying for ACBL membership and then have to pay each time they play is a hardship.

Now, since big organization can setup new virtual clubs on BBO, that means that the capacity is there, but just that BBO is reserving the capacity for paying clubs.

Would BBO re-consider their position and allow people like us - seniors - to setup a free virtual club?

Thanks

Charlie

Why not organise teams matches for them?

With the recent explosion of people using BBO and, in particular, thousands of clubs around the world now missing their face-to-face games, it can be no surprise that BBO does not have the capacity to deal with every individual club directly. Using National Bridge Organisations to handle their own members dramatically reduces the workload for BBO, provides a single point of contact for groups of clubs, and allows the NBOs to ensure that the virtual club games in their domain run smoothly.

Another key part of virtual games is that they permit organisations to charge for tournaments. The NBO ensures a single legal contract is established with BBO for this purpose. I think it is clear that it is not viable for every individual club to establish the legal contract and financial arrangements necessary to run a virtual club. Indeed I doubt you are interested in any element of this.

So I don't believe that you should be asking for a virtual club.

Your club members can play freely on BBO, but at the moment you are unable to run tournaments. What you need to do is find a BBO member who has the skill and privileges to run tournaments. If you don't have anyone with the skill to run a tournament, then any sort of tournament will prove impossible whatever BBO does.

BBO has suspended giving out the necessary privileges to run tournaments to individuals at the moment, mainly because having thousands of poorly run tournaments does nothing for customer satisfaction and would overwhelm their support capacity. But at some point they may relax these restrictions if you have a capable director available, so training someone up will help.

There are plenty of free tournaments every day on BBO. I suggest your members pick an event to descend on en masse and fraternise with the rest of BBO.

And, as Gordon says, arranging team matches between yourselves works very well. My local club has six team matches per afternoon twice a week; these can be run by anyone who has been a BBO member for two weeks and has 100+ logins. It is a great step to learning about how to be a BBO director.
