I might be optimistic, but what are the distributions of the other 2 hands? Partner rates to have either a 6 card suit or 2 5 card suits. He surely doesn't have a 6 card major or he'd bid it. My guess is that he's got 5 in a major and 5 .
So I would X, penalty oriented but partner can remove in his suit with yarbrough.

What were partner's options over 3? In particular, what would a double have meant?

Thanks all. Vote is 4-4 for pass and double.

This was a hesitation ruling. I had called the TD as South had taken around 20s to pass, then this hand doubled and partner went three down (he had overcalled with AKxxx xxx - A8xxx). N said pass was in normal tempo; while S is a slow player, he's not _that_ slow.

I felt pass was an LA, as shown by the results here. But TD had polled two players who both doubled, so result stood.
