pass
"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

3NT (I guess the idea behind pass is that we hope partner will reopen with X, but we have a lot of strength so partner is likely to be minimum; we are also vul vs not, so should take the vul game)

Pass is might end the auction and they are not vulnerable.

3NT gets the vulnerable game, but I suspect we might be in the slam zone. The difficulty is how to investigate slam - I'm tempted to bid 4.

your bid?

I rank
  • 3N = NAT. Best of a bad job.
  • 6N = NAT. Optimistic.
  • Pass = NAT. Hoping that partner re-opens.

17 hcp 12 for p if they are min. SURELY the opps own 5hcp in spades (i say with huge regret normally). That leaves the opps with around 6hcp outside spades. If lho has no spade 6n should be pretty easy to make and if lho does have a spades we have to cross our fingers and hope against hope rho has no outside trick (I have said with huge regret many a time).

Put me down for 6n as I cannot reasonably search for 7.

Please do not ask me my opinion about pass. :) It might make D Trump look civilized by comparison.

In any form of the game, I think a NT bid is best. Whether that bid is 3 NT or 6 NT is up to you.

If partner holds all the honor cards possible in the minors AQJ K it only comes to 10 HCP. Sure, the opener could be a rule of 20 hand like - xxx AQJxx Kxxxx, but how often will that exact hand come up. If partner is missing one of the minor honors or has a flatter opener, then surely partner has to have a honor of some sort.

With 17 HCP vulnerable, passing isn't as likely to gain as much as bidding on.

Myself, I'll simply stay "fixed" and bid 3 NT.
