MPs scoring, weak field. For better or worse, you decided not to double 1NT. Partner surprises you by doubling 2D (lead directing), how do you respond to this?

I'd bid 3D now and pass them if they compete upper.

I bid 2 NT. I use it like a cue bid.

3 is competitive.

3 NT at IMPs.

I voted for 3nt but was taught as a rookie to play mp's like it was imps (bidding wise) and hope for the best.

I agree with MrAce that 2nt is a strong positive with at least playable diamonds

If p has x with KQJx !D and out this will not fare well but even 1 more dia and we might be able to put intolerable pressure on rho by running the diamonds. 2N is just too tiny a target and how will you ever convince p that Kxxxxx and out in diamonds is probably enough to bid 3n? Our initial decision to pass helps us tremendously since p might start to think slam with Axxx x KQxxxxx x knowing that we must be near the top of our pass to bid 3n.

I prefer to play that the double shows strength (a penalty double of 1NT) rather than just showing diamonds.

If I do play it as lead directing it will partner will be prepared for me to bid diamonds with a suitable hand, so will have some values or a good diamond suit.

I think 17 total tricks, 8/9. Vul vs NV I bid 3D then double 3H. I think there will be a substantial difference between +100 and +50, we might collect +300, and my partner has helped me avoid a disastrous lead and make a constructive lead I would not otherwise have made.

If p has KQxxx and Q, we need the two kings to be onside (or LHO might lead away from K). So 3nt is not crazy. Agree with Timo that 2NT is enough at matchpoints, though. This obviously shows a diamond fit.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
