My partner psyched a 2nt opener in a team game, took a long time to play the K♦ at trick 1 and a longer time to drop the stiff King offside.

I took advantage of EW not having a firm agreement on the meaning of 2NT, but it was quite hard.

First I won ♠K to lead a heart from dummy, if spades are 2-2 the hand makes easilly but when they are 3-1 I need ♠A to get to my hand.

Playing a heart to the King lets West think partner might have ♥Q10(x) so he returns a heart which gives me 1 tempo, 1 step closer to my objective.

I come to hand with ♠A discovering the bad news, and now I lead ♥7, intending to ruff it in dummy, tempting East to overruff, in which case he has to cash out properly, or else I will be able to ruff a club in dummy.

However West forgets to cover ♥7 which makes me guess if East has ♥108 or ♥1098, I guess the former and risk running it, but now I gotta be careful not to discard a club, otherwise they will instantly cash ♣AK before playing diamonds, I discard a diamond first to let them think I might want to keep the clubs for something.

East ruffs the trick and plays an attitude club through, West wins, cashes ♦A and sees an encouraging signal from East, and here is where the lack of knowledge towards 2NT bid comes, When partner is 3-5 in the minors, a second club lets me pitch 3 diamonds from dummy and ruff another, he guesses wrong and I make the contract. Not worth much since my teammates bid and made 5♦X

I was the victim on this gem today:

Declarer is the Polish-Spannish star Artur Wasik, he opened 2NT, and answered 3♥ to stayman that could be 4-card only


On ♣J lead I hessitated perhaps too much on first trick debating to let it run and win some info, or perhaps win ♣A and risk a low diamond hoping declarer has exactly ♦KJ (or an unlikely QJ)

In the end I decided against since it was really risky to play a low diamond in case declarer had ♦KQ with the obvious pitch from ♣KQ.

But when I won ♣A, declarer droped ♣Q, an obvious doubleton..., I saw no danger at all, I could just return a low diamond on this position, but it shouldn't matter, declarer has at most 5♥, 4♠, 1♣, so he will need to tackle diamonds himself sooner or later, and hopefully missguess if he has KJ.

Little did I know, declarer had 5♥ tricks from hand, and to add to those he also had a club ruff in dummy, and although he didn't have ♠J, after sneaking a diamond through he squeezed me for the 12th trick. +480 collected all the MPs on the board.
