IMPs (EBU club teams night).

You're W, a good club player. Natural Acol-style bidding; the alert of S's 2 was just because it promises 4; S could have 4 s and 4 s, but will then be 15+ HCP.

  • What calls do you consider?

  • Which call do you make?

(If you wouldn't have bid 3 on the previous round, please indicate.)

PS: The Alert was what happened at the table - it is not required by regulation. Please don't concern yourselves with it.

1) pass
2) pass

Agreed. West has completely told his story.

But that alert rule was funny (if it really is a regulation).
In my world South would have (support) doubled with 3 hearts (and passed with less) so he must have exactly 4 since he didn't open with a 1 bid.

It seems to me that if support doubles are being played an alert here is sensible, though I don't know whether it is required by regulation.

I would consider and bid only pass, but not happily as I have badly misdescribed my hand with the 3 bid.

At these colors and in the passout seat, I will briefly consider 4 before passing.

What would you rather have bid opposite a passed hand 1 overcall ?

Also slightly relevant to this is what partner can't have (ie what a 2 opener would have shown, and how aggressively they open). I can't imagine bidding here, particularly if partner's pass wasn't in tempo.

Yes partner might have KQxxx, xxx, xx, Qx or similar and we might have a good save available, but once I've bid 3 I need to live with it, if I was going to bid 4 I did it last time.

What are the agreements on overcalls? It makes quite some difference if EW play weak jumps, in which case 1 shows a decent hand with values and double would certainly be an option, otherwise pass is a more than reasonable choice. But there might be players who would go to 4, given the vulnerability, especially when E has a habit of making very weak overcalls.

Peter, you might get a wider response, it you inserted a proper poll -- preferably one where you can see who voted for what.

On the previous round, you might prefer 2N to show a near maximum pass, with 4-card support, and some defence. (3 and 3 would have shown a 3-card raises, focusing on the better suit).
If you had previously described your hand, you would probably choose to pass, now.
Having previously misdescribed your hand, you might consider 4 too, now.

I don't think 3S is a mis-description opposite a passed-hand overcall, and I pass now.
