Make me down for a pass.

The spade suit is way too weak for a 4 card overcall.
I have more than enough strength for a double, but I can't stomach a 2 advance.
Too weak for 1NT

Pass.

If it goes 1 - P - P - ?, I'm depending on partner to balance with any reasonable bid. If not, we probably haven't missed much.

If responder makes a call, we are probably better off out of the auction with this K oriented hand.

Double seems normal, even in England. 1 and 1NT make me feel ill.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

1NT, and no reservations.

HCP analysis assumes unknowns. When you expect heavy values to your right, honors grow up. Kings and tenaces take more tricks than usual, because hooks work more than usual. This hand is loaded with positional under-evaluation if you just count HCP.
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Yeah specially KQ grow up a lot, assming RHO will duck twice when we play the suit form dummy with the many entries we have, and later we will play towards our kings as well.

Automatic double for me.

It might have 15 HCP, but its certainly not worth 15 HCP!

It has 14 HCP. (But it isn't worth that either.)

I'll pass - it's close to an X but the hand is just so bad. Maybe I shouldn't wimp out and just go for it NV though.

Pass in tempo.

A bad 14 (don't like KQ doubleton) and wretched intermediates. In addition to which, two diamonds from P is the last thing you want to hear.

If partner balances, however, it's a totally different proposition.

I wouldn't mind if my partner passed with this, but I would double to show the points and the 4-card ♠. It would feel much better with 7 instead of 7, or course, but I believe it should turn out right more often than wrong.
Give me at least J instead of 7, and I will think about 1NT.
1♠ never, promises 5 cards. Would I want a ♠ lead that desperately with this hand?

I used to pass with these, but have now been converted to the view that double is a clear winning strategy in the 21st century. You lose way too many part score battles by passing.

Our style with this point count and shape is to overcall 1, but I hate the quality of the spade suit, KQ10x, Kxx, Kx, Kxxx I'd overcall 1 automatically. I wasn't faced with this problem, I was the partner of the opening bidder. My team mate passed and the auction arrived in 4= pretty quickly. At my table the auction went 1-(X)-2N(4 card raise to 3 or better)-(3)-4-(4) and the partner of the hand I gave had Qxxxxx, x, xxx, xxx so when we didn't lead a club from AQx we could only collect 50 for a 9 IMP loss.
