Cheaters face harsh punishment
Ever since the bridge world was rocked three
months ago by Boye Brogeland’s accusation that two
of his teammates in winning efforts had been cheating,
World Bridge Federation President Gianarrigo Rona
has been in the vortex of the scandal and all that
followed.
The fallout has included new attention to bridge
in the media, especially in Italy, where Rona lives.
In Denver, two magazines – Vanity Fair and Rolling
Stone – had reporters working on articles about bridge.
Rona met with a Rolling Stone reporter on Tuesday.
There have been questions about the WBF’s
commitment to ridding the game of cheaters, but Rona
says the issue was on his agenda from the moment
he became WBF president in late 2010. One of his
first acts as president, he says, was to institute a
disciplinary code and a method of adjudicating cases.
He has also been working to amend WBF regulations
to enhance the organization’s power to deal with
any other bridge entity – including national bridge
organizations – that fails to take action where it’s
warranted. “We need
the support of the
federations,” Rona
says. “If they don’t
act against cheaters,
we can act against
them.”
As part of the
WBF’s plan to
address the issue
of cheating, Rona
travelled to Denver
to meet with
ACBL officials and
members of a committee of high-level players whose
job it is to screen reports of unethical behavior with an
eye to prosecuting those considered serious enough to
warrant suspension.
For convicted cheaters, the first offense will result
in a 10-year suspension. A lifetime ban will be the
punishment for a second conviction.
As of Jan. 1, there will be an email address on
the WBF website (worldbridge.org) for interested
parties to report possible violations. Accusers will
have to provide details, but only the high-level players
committee will see such reports. The identities of those
who make reports will remain confidential.
Some reports and complaints may be discarded,
Rona said, but those considered serious or potentially
serious will be kept and maintained in archives on the
players whose ethics have been questioned.
Additionally, Rona said, security at tournaments
will be increased in much the same way as the ACBL
does with video recording of high-level events.
At the 2016 World Bridge Games in Wroclaw,
Poland, next year, all tables in the knockout phases of
the teams events will have cameras and other methods
of monitoring play. For the next Bermuda Bowl, in
2017, all tables in all stages of competition will have
such monitoring.
It’s a big job but necessary to preserve the
integrity of the game, Rona said. “Bridge is a game of
rules,” he said. “If you don’t follow the rules, you’re
out.”
Rona says a lot of what has been circulated about
the game in the wake of the scandal has been little
more than gossip. He is committed to assuring a fair
process – one that gives the accused the chance to
defend themselves.
Ever the bridge promoter, Rona has taken the
opportunity while answering questions about cheating
to extol the virtues of the game, especially for young
people. “I hope the reporters will write about bridge as
it really is,” he says.
Young players, he notes, “have friendship, learn
communication and social skills and working with
others, and they learn how to make decisions quickly.”
That, he says, is why unethical play is such a scourge.
“If you cheat,” he says, “all these things are trash. You
cannot enjoy the game if you cheat.”
Although the main purpose of Rona’s trip to
Denver was to talk about the fight against cheaters,
he also took time to promote the next world
championship – the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw,
Poland, next September. There will be four categories
of teams – open, women’s, seniors and mixed.
All players must be from the same national bridge
organization (e.g., United States Bridge Federation
or Canadian Bridge Federation), but each may send
a team for each of the categories. The schedule will
include pairs games in each of the four divisions with
no limit on the number of pairs from each NBO.
Wroclaw is easy to get to from major cities in
Germany or from Warsaw.
Rona says he is also hoping for a good turnout
from various nations for the World Youth Teams
Championships in Salsomaggiore, Italy, Aug. 3-13
next year.

BBO主席Fred在每年一度的新年寄语里，也打破了惯例。以前每年都是重点介绍BBO软件情况，今年不提及，而是重点回顾了极不平凡的2015年最重要的大事件- -挪威超级明星Boye Brogeland提议的作弊指控案，对在BBO线上作弊及其在2016年所要采取的措施和鉴定都做了全面细致的介绍。
全文如下：
2015 - Year of the C-word
The world of bridge tends to change very slowly, but 2015 will surely be remembered as a truly momentous year in the history of our game.
In August, Norwegian superstar Boye Brogeland came forward with allegations that Lotan Fisher and Ron Schwartz, a young Israeli pair who had won several major events during the past few years, were cheating. Naturally Boye presented evidence to back up his claim and, in the months to follow, further evidence surfaced.
But the Fisher-Schwartz partnership was only the first domino to fall. Soon thereafter similar allegations were made against the world's top-ranking partnership, Fulvio Fantoni and Claudio Nunes of Monaco, German champions Josef Piekarek and Alex Smirnoff, and Cezary Balicki and Adam Zmudzinski of Poland (who have been winning major titles as a pair for over 30 years).
At this point in time only Piekarek and Smirnoff have confessed to their guilt (to their credit I suppose). Official investigations of the other 3 accused pairs are ongoing and it is difficult to predict where they might lead. For whatever its worth, my sense is that the vast majority of the world's leading players find the evidence against all of those accused to be both clear and compelling.
The implications of all of this are both shocking and tragic for bridge: the results of dozens of major national and world championships, possibly going back for decades, have been so irretrievably tainted that they have been rendered all but meaningless.
Cheating scandals at the top of world bridge have been very few and far between (I recall only two others since I started playing bridge in the early 1980s). Nothing even remotely close to the events of 2015 has ever happened before. What has changed?
One thing that has certainly changed is that a group of world class players, led by Boye, took the initiative to try to clean up the game they love. Rumors about all 4 of the accused pairs had been swirling around for years, but the relevant authorities either refused to investigate or were incapable of seeing the light. Boye decided that someone had to do something and he bravely took it upon himself to be that someone.
But most likely Boye would not have got very far had it not been for relatively recent changes in technology. Only in the past few years have tournament organizers began to present video streams of their premier events on the Internet. Those videos, along with the bidding and play records produced by BBO vugraph, were the primary sources of information used by Boye and company to crack the codes that were being used by the alleged cheating pairs.
We play bridge because it is such a beautiful, stimulating, and enjoyable game and because of the many wonderful people we get to interact and compete with who feel the same way. The mere thought of desecrating our great game through cheating is so repugnant to most of us that the very concept is enough to make us feel sick. How is it possible that so many amazing bridge talents have apparently fallen from grace?
Money likely had something to do with it. Nowadays the most successful professional players can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Their jobs consist of travelling the world to high-level tournaments often in luxurious style. Some work no more than a few months each year. Not a bad life if you ask me.
However, as we unfortunately see on BBO, there has to be more to it than that. On BBO (and of course in live bridge clubs and tournaments) there is little if any money awarded to the winners yet people still cheat. Why is that? I can only assume that ego, status, and the quest for masterpoints are sufficient motivators for some of our fellow bridge players to act in a way that would be unthinkable to the rest of us.
As I would like to go into 2016 on a more positive note, I will share some good news with you:
1) Contrary to popular opinion, it is very possible to identify those who cheat at online bridge. Our primary tools for identifying possible cheats are statistical in nature (Boye and company used similar techniques to help identify which pairs merited closer scrutiny).
2) Such statistics strongly suggest that the percentage of BBO players who cheat is much smaller than you might think.
3) The penalties for those who are caught cheating on BBO, particularly in our ACBL games (where we have a responsibility to be extra vigilant) are severe. The ACBL is sent a detailed report about any of its members that are caught cheating on BBO. We would do the same for any other National Bridge Federations that were willing to award masterpoints on our site.
4) We certainly could do better in this area. I am hopeful that the cheating scandals of 2015 will help to inspire and motivate those who run and work for BBO (including me) to improve.
5) BBO offers various forms of online bridge in which it is either very difficult or completely impossible to cheat. Our software also includes facilities that make it easy for you to keep track of which BBO members are honest and pleasant and to avoid those who you find to be dishonest or rude. Please e-mail support@bridgebase.com if you want more information on how these things work.
While I believe that Boye Brogeland's initiative was unfortunately necessary (due to the long term failure of administrators to adequately police our game), it should be said that his actions violated a cardinal rule for proper behavior at bridge: that public accusations of cheating are completely inappropriate.
So please do not take my admiration and appreciation of Boye as a license to launch your own public anti-cheating campaign on BBO. If you think your opponents might be cheating, the only proper channel to go through is to e-mail abuse@bridgebase.com. We have highly-trained professionals on our staff that will investigate any cheating allegations on our site and take action if we find that the evidence leaves no doubt as to guilt (the bar is set this high in order to ensure that no innocent person is ever convicted).
To the many thousands of honest and decent people who play and watch bridge on BBO, I hope you have a great 2016! To the small number of BBO members who cheat, please take a close look in the mirror - I don't think you will like what you see. Please make it your New Year's resolution to start playing our wonderful game with the honor and respect it deserves.

1) Contrary to popular opinion, it is very possible to identify those who cheat at online bridge. Our primary tools for identifying possible cheats are statistical in nature (Boye and company used similar techniques to help identify which pairs merited closer scrutiny).
2) Such statistics strongly suggest that the percentage of BBO players who cheat is much smaller than you might think.
3) The penalties for those who are caught cheating on BBO, particularly in our ACBL games (where we have a responsibility to be extra vigilant) are severe. The ACBL is sent a detailed report about any of its members that are caught cheating on BBO. We would do the same for any other National Bridge Federations that were willing to award masterpoints on our site.
4) We certainly could do better in this area. I am hopeful that the cheating scandals of 2015 will help to inspire and motivate those who run and work for BBO (including me) to improve.
5) BBO offers various forms of online bridge in which it is either very difficult or completely impossible to cheat. Our software also includes facilities that make it easy for you to keep track of which BBO members are honest and pleasant and to avoid those who you find to be dishonest or rude. While I believe that Boye Brogeland's initiative was unfortunately necessary (due to the long term failure of administrators to adequately police our game), it should be said that his actions violated a cardinal rule for proper behavior at bridge: that public accusations of cheating are completely inappropriate.
So please do not take my admiration and appreciation of Boye as a license to launch your own public anti-cheating campaign on BBO. If you think your opponents might be cheating, the only proper channel to go through is to e-mail abuse@bridgebase.com. We have highly-trained professionals on our staff that will investigate any cheating allegations on our site and take action if we find that the evidence leaves no doubt as to guilt (the bar is set this high in order to ensure that no innocent person is ever convicted).
To the many thousands of honest and decent people who play and watch bridge on BBO, I hope you have a great 2016! To the small number of BBO members who cheat, please take a close look in the mirror - I don't think you will like what you see. Please make it your New Year's resolution to start playing our wonderful game with the honor and respect it deserves.

如何看待2015年8月开始的桥牌革命？
这事情，本质上还是因为一个字：利。
职业桥牌近年来在北美（ACBL地盘）愈发红火，主要就是欧洲（以及其他地方，比如福/赵这样的中国选手）牌手也加入了这块领地，90年代Nickell那支队横扫NABC，但现在就不行了，到处都是欧洲牌手加盟的职业队，你看ACBL公告，每次范德比、斯苹果的种子队名单，主力不是意大利人，就是瑞典、丹麦、法国、以色列......
过去美国职业牌手很安稳，现在抢饭碗的来了，纷争自然就多了。
而利这个东西，当然会逼着人剑走偏锋。
桥牌组织，包括WBF和ACBL，还是乐见其成的，除了净化桥牌，更主要的是这回他们不必出面，而是牌手自行检举揭发，这样好省掉一大可能的诉讼费。这方面ACBL有过教训，70年代末他们处罚过一对作弊牌手，但被对方反过来起诉，要求赔偿百万美元，所以为了规避风险，桥牌组织处理这类事件时都很小心。
这回事情主要牛逼在
1.当事人地位太牛逼了，当世世界冠军、过去10年这个圈最牛的对之一，现在被爆作弊；
2.以色列、意大利、德国.....第一块多米诺骨牌倒了之后，接二连三爆出来更多，还不知道接下来有没有接着爆料的；
3.这件事情动静太大，接下来各职业队多半会来一次大洗牌......
桥牌这个东西，反正作弊几十年一直有，从里斯的手指信号，到法基尼/朱凯利的踏板信号，一路到现在......其实哈曼他们连蓝队都怀疑可能作弊，对，就是老贝老葛那几位。
前几年,ACBL在范德比\斯苹果这样的大型队式淘汰赛初段,是不拉幕,只有16进8开始起才拉幕,但是!!!只有一对除外!!!这一对无论什么阶段都拉幕!!!
这就是无声的语言,脸上刺着"有作弊嫌疑"的金印.

至于“电子牌”，我估计会受到一大波牌手的强烈反对，因为“桌感”对牌手是个很重要的因素，临场的气氛、节奏、对方微小的动作、表情，甚至都可能让你“感觉”到什么。现在玩电子，这些一撸到底，你让那些没了感觉的牌手怎么玩？
不是有这个故事吗？克卜生（还是另一个牛人）打7S，摊下来发现根本没什么好打的，可旁观者们都不走！！！他们有什么好看的？克卜生就打了将牌4-1分，果然如此，这就叫桌感。
你把桌感拿走了，那些“神奇”还玩得出来吗？
这种桌感与场外非法信息是两回事，是完全合法的。里斯的书里提到这个例子：
他有两门花色，一门是明手A109对暗手KQJ（即没有输张的），另一门是明手A109对着暗手KJx（即他有一个两面捉Q的猜断），定约成败就在于捉Q上，于是他测试了一下对手，出没输张的那门，暗手出J，假装要飞，对手“犹豫”了，于是他知道对手是有点道德问题的。现在出需要抓Q的那门J，没有犹豫，飞！
Dorothy Hayden的书《bid better play better》里也记录过她一个靠“桌感”的例子，一个机会不是很好的6，将牌6-2，缺KJ9,短时间内她当然知道有什么百分比打法，但桌上她选择了概率最低的那个。为什么？因为其中一名对手看上去并不“垂头丧气”，相反很期待、很“跃跃欲试”的样子，说明他很有打宕的把握，所以就打他将牌持大。
电子牌把这些全撸了，咱就看不到这些名著咧。

2- 扪心自问： 桌感是否是公认的公平的桥牌竞技的组成部分？如果回答：是，那么您对了，我错了！如果回答：否，那么我对了，您错了，因为这就是水分！！！这就是浊水的水，还会是别的成份吗？鸡鸣狗盗似的技巧是破坏公平竞技的大敌，以"桌感"之类的左道旁门方式获取额外的非法信息有辱斯文！醒醒吧！桌感的引申意义都无碍公平性吗？
