In this day and age, double has acquired the meaning, in many sequences, of 'I have more strength than you expect on the bidding so far, I lack a big fit for you, and am uncertain as to whether we should be declaring or defending, but I can't pass it to you'

Partner won't/shouldn't expect a trump stack and he is expected to pull with extra shape or with a fit and significant extras.

He will pass with a moderate hand with 5 spades and fewer than 4 diamonds. He may also pass with some useful clubs for us so we may end up with 300 or 500 against our 600/620/1370.

However, he may hold AJxxx xx xxx xxx, and bidding would turn +300 or so into -100 or so, and that is a lot of imps.

I think the flexible double is the correct call with a good partner. It is also the correct call with a poor partner, but is more inclined to work out poorly.
