Strangely Gib don't open 1 with 12hcp.

Its a 3rd/4th opening and so not so unreasonable- honestly quite sensible to allow "strongish" pre-empts in 3/4th seat where game is far less likely from a standard opening and the standard opening gives far more opportunities to opponents.

I think I might make the same bid in third seat, to make it hard for opps to find their likely spade fit.

Maybe it is only a temporary solution for what you said,here we need a playable approach.
If your opioion is correct,Gib's opening range is too wide,especially for this hand with 2.5 quick tricks.
