My online partner opened 2C. With 4HCP + 1 length point (balanced hand & longest suit 5D), I was intending to respond 2D as a waiting bid indicating 0-7 pts. However, my RHO overcalled 2S. As a novice, I wasn't sure what to do....2NT, 3D or pass? I passed. What was the correct response in the circumstances?

Hi Lulu, welcome to the forum!
You might try 2NT if you have a spade stopper, or maybe dbl if you have four hearts (assuming that partner doesn't take dbl as meaning something else), but if you don't have any specific agreements about this situation then pass is fine.
3♦ maybe if the suit is good.
You don't have to be afraid that partner also passes. Your pass is forcing.

The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Many people use X = 0-3, pass = 4-7 or less commonly the reverse
