How to open at first seat?
I don't know which is better for 1♣ or 1♦.
It seems open 1♣ is playable if partner respond higher suit at 1-level.
However there are several special hands.


1- 1♣ -- 1nt,now opener only pass? rebid 2♣?
2- 1♣ - 2nt(invitiona hand),How to handle? only pass? or rebid 3♣?


For me,I will open 1♦,and prepare to rebid 1♠ or 2♣.
How do you think of it?

How many clubs does your partner have if he bids 1NT over your 1♣ opening? Unless you are playing something unusual, he has at least 4. What's wrong with playing in a 9-card fit?

It's a clear 1♣ opening for me.

While there is something to be said for opening 1D with 4D5C, it should only be done when you have rebid problems. You don't have rebid problems here. As mgoetze said, you can just rebid 2C if it goes 1C-P-1N. It's extremely unlikely to anyway seeing as the opponents would have half the deck and at least 10 hearts. Meanwhile if it does get competitive, I am going to be really glad I opened 1C.

You can handle all 1 level responses, esp. due to the good 4 card spade suit.

For both of these, do not pass. It seems you may be losing 5 or 6 tricks in hearts.

1♦ 1NT 2♣ is very misleading as to the lengths of the suits. The only real problem with opening 1♣ occurs when you are playing weak jump responses in hearts, but then you probably won't be.

If it was a 0=4=4=5 you might want to open 1♦ to avoid a rebid problem (1♣-1♠-2♣ might not be attractive), but when you have ♠s there's no need to deviate from opening your longest suit.

IMO 1♣ = 10, 1♦ = 8.

• After 1♣ - 1N - ??: 2♣
• After 1♣ - 2N - ??: 3♣

With ♠ - ♥ A J T 8 ♦ K T 9 7 ♣ K T 9 8 4, I would still open 1♣ and rebid 2♣ over 1♠.

1♣ and pass 1nt if partner bids it, but compete to 3♣ if opponents compete in ♥ over the 1nt call (which I hope they don't if it goes 1♣-P-1nt-P-? and I pass; If RHO couldn't overcall 1♥ or X over 1♣ are they really going to bid 2♥ or X over 1nt?).
