To be frank it is probably not worth the devotion of resources, but ...

I was part way through an robot instant tourney when I was called to assist with dinner. I was doing quite well in the tourney and had reasonable expectation of first place, but had to make a snap decision: Do I complete the tourney or do I preserve domestic harmony?

No contest. 'er indoors takes precedence.

But it need not have been necessary to choose one to the exclusion of the other.

The time-outs currently exist because in the absence of any information to the contrary, the server has to "call it a day" at some point and reasonably places some arbitrary period of inactivity as the justification for drawing a veil over the tourney.

What is missing from the equation is the opportunity of the member to advise the server of an expected delay that exceeds the normal time-out but which is intentional.

Had I been able to notify the server of (say) a 1.5 hour extended time-out I could come back after dinner and claim my 0.60 master points (I know, sheesh).

I suppose that there would still have to be an absolute limit to any permitted extension. Or maybe it could be renewed and extended if done each time within the existing time-out.

Obviously only applies to instant tourneys where there are no other members hanging on the outcome of the tourney.

Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

> The time-outs currently exist

There are two reasons. The smaller reason is that I do want to call it a day at some point. was 30 mins of inactivity too short? dunno. I wouldn't mind increasing that.

The more difficult reason is that robots also have a finite lifespan ( just in case, from my POV ).

I could probably increase the timeout but i'd need to cater to robots throwing in the towel also. This would be relatively easy to do in the case of instant Ts but only if i had a good signal for when to restart.

So maybe something like: if u logout w/o withdrawing, let the tourney live for (say) N hours - even If the robot dies during that timeframe, don't close the table ( the default behavior ) if the player is offline . Then on re-login, we'll restart the bot as usual and all might be well.

that might work. but it isn't likely to be too useful . I'll take a look in case it is really simple to code.

Let's see if it works or is useful but when next update goes in, the timeout for Instant Tourneys will be 90 mins ( if you're logged off ) and 30 mins as usual ( if you're seated ).

So if you get dragged away, just logoff first and get back within an hour and a half
