I'm sure that I would bid 2♣ as East over 1♣-Pass-1♦ (negative). Interesting that this didn't happen.
Assuming no competition:
1♣ (16+) - 1♠ (balanced or diamonds)
1N (17-19) - 2♥ (inv 4♥ and 5+♦ NF)
3♣ (values) - 3NT (spade help)
The south hand upgrades a bit with the knowledge of the big diamond fit. The 3♣ values call helps to reach 5♦ if north has short spades (say x Qxxx KJxxx xxx).

Good hand for my system.
1C--1D (strong, H or pts)
1NT--2C (17-18 denies 4H, 2C D transfer)
2H-- (supper accept) --- 3NT.

From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

Ashamed that I can not reach the game
1♣(15+nat/bal,21+any)-1♠(bal w/o 4♠, or ♦, or 4♥-5+♦, or 3 suiter short ♠, about 6-12)
1NT(15-17)-2♣(stayman)
2♦-P

Meckwell-Lite:
1♣ - 1♦ (16; 0-7)
1N - 3♣ (17+ - 18; Puppet Stayman)
3N
Note that this system uses a 19-20 2N and 1N is 15-17- in third seat. At this vulnerability, better 17 counts routinely open 1C (same for better 16 balanced in first and second, playing a 14-16 range).

Pet two-way pass:
pass 1♣
1NT 2♣
2♦ pass
pass = 0-8 or 15+
1♣ = 0-8 or 15+
1NT = natural 15-17 (5M ok)
2♣ = 5-card non forcing stayman
2♦ = no 4 or 5M
I would not reach game.

This looks like a hand evaluation problem for any with 17/18 as their boundary point. If the South hand is 17 then
P - 1♣ = 15-17 nat/bal or 18+ any
... - 1♦ = most non-GF hands
1NT = 15-17 bal (or 4414)
... - 2♣ = Puppet Stayman
2♦ = no 5 card major
If 18 then
P - 1♣ = 15-17 nat/bal or 18+ any
... - 1♦ = most non-GF hands
1♥ = 18-20 any or 23+ bal
... - 1♠ = most hands
1NT = 18-20 bal
... - 2♣ = Puppet Stayman
2♦ = no 5 card major
... - 2♠ = 4 hearts (N could show 4M5+♦ instead but hand is a little weak for that)
2NT = min, <4 hearts
... - 3NT
I think I prefer the first auction since KJ tight is enough to offset the other positive features enough not to upgrade.
