How badly?

I read about Ron Anderson comparing a match when Mike Passel said "read em out" and Anderson said "It doesn't matter, we are blitzed".

Passel said "A hundred bucks?" and Anderson said "-1100 etc.". They won by a few.

3nt

It is extremely unlikely we are going to score big with 3n it is a
fairly easy bid. IMHO the conditions of contest call for something
a bit more unusual I get the feeling 3N will not readily get us
the points we need. I think we need to hunt for a dia or even a
heart slam and therefore I propose the underbid call of

3d

I say this not because I think it is a great bid but I feel it gives
us our best chance of finding a slam and a ton of those elusive points.
If p bids 3s over our 3d we can still back in with 3n but if they happen
to raise dia or bid 3h:))))))))))))))))))))

Good thought and not as risky as it seems with a stiff spade. If lho bids them we may avoid a doomed 3nt and if partner bids them we get to 3nt anyway.

And if partner bids anything else we may surprise them with 4nt as our next call.

Thx all. Here's the hands:

I bid what seems to be a pretty normal 3NT and suffice to say it didn't turn out well... (Teammates went 1 down in 4 on a trump lead.) This hand brought me "visions of Cardiff", a european championship I played on, where the wrong choice would normally net you -1100 LOL.

I suppose the slight underbid of 3 would be a possibility given match status. You don't need to overbid to generate swings.. you can do it the other way around :)
