IMP scoring. Do you agree with S's first pass (1N would have been natural)? If so, what's your call now?

If 1NT would be natural last round, I would have bid 1NT. If not I will talk to partner about changing our agreement.

Sandwich 1N overrated - double will do. However, if you have a strong 1N overcall this is likely your last chance to describe your hand.

The final question is easy. We had our chance at the 1-level to get in there and show a NT hand. Now, it is too late and too dangerous. It was dangerous previously, but we would have done it. They have had a chance to limit their strength, they might well be in a misfit, and might have twice as many hearts as we do.

Waltzing in now to generate a huge minus is not a good idea.

I would have bid 1NT the first time. But I didn't. Now the auction has died and I would still like to compete. I prefer 2H to a double. I expect the opps to take the push and bid one more; I do not expect or wish that partner will compete further.

DBL to balance. 2D or 2H would be an acceptable contract
and have a good chance to make opposite even a very poor hand.

My old teacher always said, "Never let them play at the two
level in a fit".

And it's been sage advice. Give them a shove to the 3 level
or take your chances in the red suits.

And I agree--I would've bid first--no reason to confuse partner.

You are one point shy of a 1NT bid. I would not bid it but there are only a few of us solid citizens left. My guess is most would bid 1NT. The sad thing is that there are probably very few players who even realize the hand is not good enough for a 1NT call.

What makes you so sure opponents have a fit?

There are some players who don't believe the hand is good enough for a 1NT call on the first round. Your words make it sound like they are right. I disagree.

I don't play 1nt natural here but if you can't bid it with these cards, what on earth do you need? And how do you explain that it's on the card but we pass when we own it?

Maybe some different methods/disclosure are in order.

The requirements for a 1NT overcall are different depending on position. In fact, the requirements for a 1NT opening bid is also different from that of a 1NT overcall. Let's say you play 15-17 notrump. No matter what your opening NT range is, direct seat 1NT overcall is 15.5 - 18.25. When both opponents have bid a 1NT overcall is 16.75-19.00

Thank you for sharing your requirements. "THE" requirements might not be quite the same.

"The" requirements for notrump overcalls are real, whether you believe them or not. I am surprised by the pride you seem to take in your lack of understanding of elementary bidding.

What on earth do you need? Perhaps you need a hand that is worth a 1NT overcall - that is one that at least has a source of tricks instead of some scattered high cards.
