Again matchpoints
2 is alerted as 12-16 with a three-suited hand, unspecified shortness.
2NT asks for shortness.
3 shows heart shortness.

5 to put it to them or pass if you think it might go float. 4 is lame and a waste of time.

Since I assume this is an opening lead problem, rather than a bidding problem, I lead a trump.

I pass.

Yeah, partner has . But bidding on with a poor fitting 4-3-3-3 hand isn't usually a winning proposition. If they have the points, you need distribution to off set the tricks they'll take with their HCs. Without some compensating distribution, you offer no trick taking help to partner except for maybe saving a trick or so in the trump suit. All partner's losers outside the trump suit are likely to remain losers.

This bidding does not add up--rho would have us believe they are not interested
in game opposite a short heart by lho. Our p has made a delayed 3h bid how is it
possible for rho to have a "lot" of stuff in hearts????????????????????????

IMO p has a VERY nice hand but could find no good bid over 2d. Rho is just playing
around with a weakish 55 type hand (knowing they have a big trump fit somewhere)
hoping they can muddy the waters enough to keep us from finding our game. That is
just one clue.

What type of hand does p have where they could not bid 2h but now suddenly feel
it is ok to bid 3h (when there is in theory a unlimited opponent to their left). It is not
reasonable for 4h to be a lead director (we have the KJ9) so that leaves us trying
to imagine what type of hand p could have where a 2h bid would have been a bad
idea but a 3h bid suddenly seems right.

IMO p has a hand that was just too strong to bid 2h and felt they would have another
bid to describe their hand to their p on the next round (maybe they sort of "knew"
lho was going to be short in hearts because they have a ton of length). I am thinking
p has a hand similar to x Axxxxxx AKx AKx. What is p supposed to do over 2d???
pards seems the most logical especially if you know the opps system will force them to
b 3d to show their most likely short heart suit. Surely we do not wish to bid 2h 3h or 4h
directly over 2d p (thinking like we do) passed 2d and waited for their chance to show
hearts in an otherwise monster hand.

P chose a 3h bid because they see no sense in going for a telephone number when the
opps can make no more than a partial. They had no clue that rho was weak when they bid
3h so a certain amount of discretion was needed. I think our heart holding is sufficient
for us to be in game.
