What are general philosophies over opp's jump overcall? Is there a standard? I can't seem to find a clear treatment in Hardy's 2/1 or BWS, though they could assume the treatment is the same as if partner had not opened.

A specific hand partnership fumbled was:

Assuming double is takeout and new suits are natural, what meaning(s) should 3♠ have? Club support, looking for a stopper for NT, advance cue bid, any of the above to be clarified by the later auction? Absent a clear partnership agreement, would you just place the contract immediately?

Also discuss 2N nat or club raise.

I play 3♠ as strong club raise or looking for stop, if partner bids 3N and you pull to 4♣ this is a slam try. Can get murky if partner doesn't bid 3N.

I play a 4 card club so maybe what's best for me is not best for you.

A direct 3♠ can be a good club raise and probably is for the majority of players. If just wanting to ask for a spade stop, either X or bid a new suit and rebid 3♠ on the following round. On the given hand I would to bid 3♠, which is likely to work regardless of how partner takes it. The alternatives would be 4♣ (if partner would definitely see that as forcing) or simply asking for key cards (4♣, 4♦ or 4NT depending on agreements). The latter is not going to get a warm reception on these forums but may well be the best option with some partners.
