Hi. My question is this: What does South's DBL after East's 1NT bid mean? (Asking North to bid or penalty DBL?)

Doubled of NT are almost always penalty-oriented. Doubly so at matchpoints. If parter has a hand to bid something they can. X should be either very good clubs or extras, and thus, penalty.

Cards; typically 18-19 balanced. This will often be left in but partner can bid a 5-card suit if weak.

Hi,

Assume, the X asked to bid, i.e. the X is kind of T/O style,
than the bid has to "promise" cards in every unbid suit, given
the fact, that only the doubler has bid a suit, this means it
showes cards in every suit => balanced.

The opponents also said, that they have an opening bid + the req.
values for a 1NT response, i.e. that they have roughly 20HCP.
If the X asks to bid again, it needs also to promise enough strength
to counter their strength, it needs also to promise roughly 20HCP.

If you put those things together, you end up with awns summary.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: A strong 6 card suit, with 2 side Aces can most likely be sure of
beating the contract, but are we sure, that they dont have a resting place?

I'm not sure I see the wisdom of this double with 18-19. Partner has very little and you'll get picked apart trying to defend all by yourself. I mean I suppose if you have a very easy hand to lead from and can virtually count 7 tricks that's fine. But if you just have a slew of cards which comprise sensitive holdings, the hand will be hard to beat. I mean how do you plan on setting 1nt with AJx, KJxx, AQ, KJxx?

Just because the double means, what it means, does not mean, that you always double with 18-19 bal., and that even when
you double, partner is alloed to bid on.
The double simply describes your hand, and if partner happens to have a 5 card suit, he is allowed to bid it, i.e.
the double helps you, to compete, similar if he is broke, and has a 4 card club suit, he can bid the clubs.
If he is broke, and has no 5 card suit, he may pass, hoping, that either you can beat 1NT by your own, or that you are
strong enough to hold it to 1NTX=.

Well, if opener has18-19, partner certainly looks to be weak; which makes me doubt the wisdom of such a double. But south did bid it.
