At these colours, this is worthy of a 3S pre-empt at both forms of scoring. But don't forget to make sure your partner expects that

I bid 3♠, hopefully it is preemptive here (after a double from RHO). If not, it's annoying, if partner has 15-17 with a 4-card major I want to bid 2♠ but if partner has 12-14 with a 5-card major unbalanced I'd rather bid 4♠. Of course we don't know which of the two he has so let's be a pessimist and bid 2♠.

Also depends slightly which suit you open with 4♠4m32, but happy with 3♠.

Yes, if you are playing up the line so that 1♠ is almost always 5, then 4♠ is more attractive, whereas in a majors first style 3♠ might be the better call.

Hi would tend to bid a major over a minor with 4/4 unless very strong, i.e 19 points 4234 would probably start with 1 club rather than 1 spade

The simulations say that 3♠ is the bid on this type of hand in Standard English. Switch a heart to a minor suit and you can go to 4.

I'd expect this since the OP hand is so flat. Play S/A 5 card majors I think I'd also just bid 3♠ here which is quite preemptive. Sometimes the opps can't make 4 of anything, and sometimes they'll fail to bid it when it does make.

In a 5 card major system, if PD decides to bid 4♠ here after the takeout X I'd certainly understand and maybe it is best, but without the T/O X I'd never want to directly raise 1♠ to 4♠ when this flat and have had miserable results when doing so.
