Today my partner and myself perpetrated this... strange... auction in the qualifiers of the World Youth Open pairs (the J was doubleton so nothing in the play). Any suggestions on how to improve that?

I would never bid 5 with 3 clubs, it looks really odd.

Having said that, 5 is also inconsistent, you tried to play 3NT opposite a 12 count, how can it be worse to play 4NT now opposite 18? that makes no sense.

Did 2 deny 4M ?

I would have bid 2 nat over 2 not showing extras in our style, but I can understand if you don't play that way.

Haven't you bid this hand almost as if you had Ax, KJxx, xx, Axxxx (cold grand), which might be a bit of a problem for partner's evaluation ?

Hi,

#1 Given the flat nature, the distributed values and the min value of the hand,
3NT instead of 3H would be better.
The way South did bid sounds encouraging to me, a lot more encouraging than
3NT instead of 3H.
#2 I dont think 3S is last train, if you play it that way, fine, but you need
the bid to reach 3NT, my impression is also that the disagreement gets revealed
with the 4NT bid.
If 3S is last train, 4NT is RKCB, 5C showing 0 or 3 cards, makes 6C a bid, that
asks for -1, North holding the king of trumps knowes, that the missing 2 KCs are
Aces.
#3 Assuming 4NT was viewd as quantitative, why is South running with a flat hand,
10 tricks are 1 trick less than 11.
#4 The explanations of the 5C / 6C can be translated, I know it better, No, I do,
this reveals a lack of trust in partners decison making process.

With kind regards
Marlowe

With Ax KJxx xx Axxxx I would not show even a quarter-stopper and would have anyways started with 2 over 2.
Also 4N is clearly not RKC in our agreements, it is just a quantitative raise to 6.
2 denies a 4cM; while 2M not showing extras or shape works better on this hand how are you supposed to differentiate a random 4432 from, say, a random 4126?

Playing vanilla 2/1ish don't open 4432 11 counts, at least without a good 4 card suit, exhibit 134

Sorry, brain fart, thought you were showing 1/4 of a spade stop.

It's much more simple for me with the 1 showing 4, we actually don't switch the minors so bid an inverted 2 and 3M over this is natural and 4-6 as the 2 artificial ask captures many of the other hands.
