IMP, vul. vs. not, expert opps.

You deal and hold:

AKXX XXX AJ98 XX

The auction proceeds:

1 (systemically 15 HCPs max.) - 1 - X (exactly 4) - 4.

Pass. I would have raised to 2S without interference. I am not going to let the opps badger me into an overbid by a factor of 2.

Pass. I know shortness is attractive but still need more and we are in only 4-4 fit. (which is not even guaranteed %100 in the way i play)

I'd like to play 4, but sometimes only way to play 4 is not to bid it.

I am assuming partner has a take out double available, if he doesn't have it then I bid 4

So if the bidding went
1D (P) 1S (P)

You would bid 4S?

What would you bid if 1 response guaranteed at worst singleton or void ?

I would not bid 4 ( or i would have done it in my reply above, same thing) but knowing pd has at least a stiff or a void, makes it kinda atractive.

But then again as i said we are only on a 4-4 fit, and RHO can be setting us up with 3 card heart support and a lot of defense. ( We all seen it i think ) But even if has legit 4-5 card support it doesn;t mean we are cold for game and/or only down 1 + they are making...., aiming for hands which pd can not reopen and 4 is still decent, is small target imo. Vulnerability kinda ruins it too. I can easily predict arguments for bidding 4 in some other colors.

Pass should be, but never will be, unanimous.

The superheroes who bid 4 should stick to playing solitaire. Bridge players with partners allow their partner to convey some additional information. We pass, we await partner's call.

Once in a while we will miss a decent 4-4 game. Far more frequently, we will avoid a bad, and perhaps even hopeless, contract. If partner has nothing to say, then let's hope to go plus on defence. If he can double, announcing ownership of the hand, we have a happy 4.
