I have a partner who insist on playing Rosenkrantz Doubles and Redoubles. I am very, comfortable with responsive doubles Ihave played rosenkrantz doubles before, but I prefer responsive doubles. So I am suggesting the following compromises. Anyone got any better suggestions?

If responder makes a negative double, then redouble is rosenkrantz

If responder raises opener' suit, then double is Responsive

If responder bids new suit, then double is rosenkrantz

If responder bids 1NT, then double is rosenkrantz (?)

After partner makes a preemptive overcall, rosenkrantz and responsive doubles are off (want to raise preemptive bid as soon as possible)

Is there some better mixture? Did I miss something? Anyone else play a mixture of these two?

IIRC, Lawrence doesn't play Rosenkrantz doubles and redoubles — he has a different meaning for those calls. I don't remember exactly how it works. I think it was in his second book on doubles - the one with the blue cover, not the revised second edition of his "complete book on takeout doubles".

This one is easy. There are NO Responsive Redoubles. ( ie. Responsive RDBLs don't exist ) .

I guess I play a mixture of responsive and Rosenkranz -- where responder doubles, bids a new suit, or raises, I like to use these (re)doubles to show one card short of a raise in partner's suit, and a desire to compete. When I actually have enough to raise, I do. This probably will not suit your partner, if he likes classical Rosenkranz even when you have 3 or 4 card support.

I already addressed #1 ) . ... in my post # 3.

For #2 ) I assume that partner made an overcall of a suit:

(1A) - 1B - (2A ) - DBL could be Rosenkrantz and only have

Responsive DBLs for the following:

(1A) - DBL - (2A) - DBL

#3 ) Rosenkrantz ok ... just give up Snap-Dragon DBL in 4th seat:

(1C) - 1H - (2D) - DBL

Let's look at your # 2 again --- the ONLY Responsive DBL situation on your list .

Maybe, if partner's overcall is a MAJOR, then use the DBL as Rozenkrantz .

And if the overcall is a minor, then the DBL becomes Responsive ( for example ) :

( 1m ) - 1M - ( 2m ) - DBL = Rozenkrantz ( deciding it is more important to show high honor-3rd in partner's suit ) .

( 1M ) - 2m - ( 2M ) - DBL = Responsive ( deciding it is more important to show the other Major ) .

As with many bridge conventions, the "minors don't get any respect " .

I use (1A) - 1B - (2A) - Dbl or (1A) - 2B - (2A) - Dbl for something else with a few of my partners. I play "Cue Bid Double" -- it shows a good raise of partner's suit. The name refers to the fact that I would otherwise have had to use a cue bid to show it, but that could push us too high if partner has a minimum overcall (especially in the 2nd auction, where it would force to the 4 level).
