1 showed real diamonds. 4 showed a good raise to 5 or more.

What should these mean:
- A new suit
- 5NT
- Pass then 5NT
- Pass then a new suit
- Pass then 6

(By the way, 1(3) is another auction where transfers would work quite well.)
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

IANAE but...

If you play a denial style then:-

new suit = natural grand try
5NT = GSF
pass then 5NT = control bid for hearts (asks for first round heart control)
pass then new suit = control bid (asks for a control in suit bid)
pass then 6 = grand try with 1st round heart control

If not then:-

new suit = natural grand try
5NT = GSF
pass then 5NT = control bid for hearts (shows first round heart control)
pass then new suit = control bid (shows control in suit bid)
pass then 6 = grand try asking for 1st round heart control

...seems to cover the key bases.

Zelandakh's structure is roughly what I'd expect without specific discussion. However:

In theory, it's probably best to give up GSF, use 5 as key-card blackwood (responses in three steps only: 0 or 3, 1 or 4, 2 with or without) and 5NT as the spade side suit.

In practice, it's risky to assign any delicate meanings to pass followed by pulling a double to 5/5NT/6m unless you can rely on partner to double in tempo (the need to do so will not be obvious as from partner's point of view, he will usually be making the final decision between defending 5x and bidding on).

What I think is best (and not what I play is...)

bidding 5S,5NT,6C(2+void)= responding keycards.

X = extras (suggest bidding 6)

Pass= suggest defending or

asking for a control and keycards for 7.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."
