Even thinking about bidding is a misbid.

I would pass, but I dont think X is insane. If the spade Ace was in some of the minors I would surely X.

I would pass but I definitely do not consider it "insane" to bid.

I pass, and also do not consider bidding insane, only moderately drunk.

Pass but I do consider bidding to be insane in that it's insulting to pards balancing skills.

I need another queen to even think about it, and I would reject it then

Yep, as I thought I need to rearrange my thinking in this spot. I doubled eventually worried about 2S-3S-AP and thinking 'what's the worst that can happen?' Apparently (2)-Dbl-(3)-4-(P)-P-(Dbl)-AP off two, -300 against nothing is...

I like double, it is normal with 1 more jack so it can't be that insane. Having 5 hearts is a plus (more game chances), as well as quick tricks.

And that's because partner's 4 bid was the sane thing to do?

This was the full hand:

I couldn't really fault partner for 4 (although probably dbl has something going for it) and agreed in the post-mortem that I was probs a bit light but I really thought it was a lot closer than the poll suggests! E.g. If the A was in any other suit it would be clear to bid; any other vul I would surely pass.

While it may not work out any better---this hand is a much safer balancing x than
dirext----the opps are vul and if the bidding goes 2s p 3s p p both opps are weak
since they didnt try for a vul game------------- the direct x has a much greater risk
vs reward--lho is unlimited you could be facing a xx and a sledge hammer awaiting
you and you have very few values to compete on the 3 level not vulnerable does
not mean invulnerable.
