Matchpoints, nobody vulnerable. Above average club field, and this particular EW are national caliber players.

Now what?

If you would bid at north's first turn, feel free to say so.

there is no intelligent way to explore 7d. That means 6d (if it makes 920)
is the best we can hope for from bidding---since it seems reasonable to
assume p has the rounded AK's there is a really good chance of setting
4s for 500 even 800 some days. I think i will trade in my maybe off the top
small slam for a possible MP top by passing for penalty

There is also the risk that if we bid a making small slam, partner might do something unfortunate

This looks remarkably like a 5 bid.

I pass, I am afraid that 6 diamond may not even make or that 5 Diamond is not enough to compensate.

This looks remarkably like a pass.

Aha, some support for three different calls: pass, 5, and 6. These were the calls I considered at the table, after a moderate tank I passed without confidence. This netted us +100 for half a matchpoint. Looking at the traveller, the joint top was 5+1, +420. Nobody bid 6.

In the post mortem, east told me (in so many words) don't worry, pass is auto. Obviously it didn't work out, I started thinking I should really bid diamonds, but then am I just resulting myself? eh ... I have several bad memories of passing takeout doubles with long but weak trumps, now this one too.

Partner held T ATxx KJxx AKJx. Declarer was 7303, the club queen in dummy held it to down 1, although even +300 was below average.

ill assume by below average you mean like 45% since down 2 seems pretty automatic for 300---preempts are indeed annoying thats why they work
at IMPS I would have been much happier with bidding 5d but at MP a decent chance at a top is too much to pass up you cant guess right all of
the time it is a game of %. If we were that good at guessing casinos would have no chance:)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

So, this is more or less the diagramm- just the heart honurs are divided in some way or another and the important 9 of diamonds may be with south...

I do understand the high club lead but even than, with best defence, you get 6 tricks for 4 X -3 and a top. And how can you manage to give him a 9. trick?

And how did the field managed to score 12 tricks in diamonds? Or was the nine of diamonds with partner not with Dummy?
Kind Regards

Roland

And if partner had a void spade, we were making 6 with 4 often cold eg - AJxx KJxx KQJxx.

You need a lot for 6, so it's really out of line to bid it, but if partner has the void and good controls, he will raise.

True, our defense was bad, but I didn't think -3 was possible. Which 6 tricks can we take? Even if we can get a second ruff, it gives up the natural trump trick. Three ruffs maybe .. south starting hearts? ok, possible.

I don't remember where the 9 was, but I suppose it makes sense it was in south, based on the other results.

Either you pass or you bid 6, flip a coin. Anything else seems weird to me.
