1. Provides an accurate description of values and shape
2. Protect's my Kings on the opening lead
3. No rebid problems in constructive auctions
4. I can balance in 3♣ if the opponents land in a major

1. avoids in-between rebid decision (2♣ or 3♣?)
2. at matchpoints, I am not so keen to play in clubs anyway

Agree with 1N and the reasons from hrothgar and bill, but there's also a corrolary to #2 here...which is that at teams I likely open 1C and plan to rebid 3C over most responses.

I could say that the reason is that it is matchpoints, and that would not be inaccurate. But I would probably open 1NT at IMPs as well, as it is a reasonably good description of the hand. The disadvantage to opening 1NT at IMPs is that it is going to make it difficult, if not impossible, to reach a club contract (partscore, game or slam) when it is right. That is not as much of a consideration at matchpoints, where notrump rules the roost and minor suit contacts are for children.

AND ---I want to take the 1-level away from the enemy.

Actually, at IMPs there is (IMO) even one more reason to open 1NT. But, this is a MP thread; so I will back off the tangent.

I'm happy to open 1NT here for many reasons and think that the plusses clearly outway the minuses.

Something of an experiment I suppose. In addition, I have a partner that is not fond of them, and I am trying to adapt to this style.

Maybe you are playing with my partner? Luckily my partner accepts my opening style although he still wouldn't do it - yet.
This hand was unfortunate, I managed to wrong side the conract.

11-15 with 5 strong clubs and a 4 card major, or reasonably strong 6 card club suit.
It might get passed out, or who knows. Just have to see what partner comes up with.
The most likely continuation:
2♣ - 2♦ relay, asking for a 4 card major
2N - 3♦ 6 clubs, 2 outside suits stopped (no 4 card major) - which one is not stopped?
3♠ - 4♥ no spade stop, 3N is unattractive after that.

You didn't really wrongside it, it was equally likely that the other hand had the spades and you got a top, you just played it the other way up to everybody else, sometimes you get unlucky.
