I don't quite understand the auction. Presumably 3♣ was looking for 3NT, so why should south have passed instead, and why did north pull from it? Or was 3♣ something else, and if so, what?

Maybe "should have passed" refers to the previous round of bidding?

The explanation "*" for the alerted 3♣ is not very helpful.

I think 3NT should have a 2x stop. 3C is not natural but it shows/denies no more than that. hence the *.

If East is not being excessively clever then West has the ♦Q, leaving East with all the remaining 12HCP for his 2-level vulnerable overcall on a poor 6-card suit. I'll just play a spade to the ten, heart to the ace, repeat spade finesse, finish drawing trump, and hope for diamonds 3-3 as my best chance at an overtrick.

Didn't like East double of 3♣. South could have redoubled.
Then 3NT by North would have two club stoppers if East leads clubs.

I expected a third club to come back for West to ruff; this switch to ♦J looks like a stiff.

I think I would play a spade to the Q. This wins when East is 2416 (pull East's trumps and play a diamond up). If East is 3316 I can fall back on the heart finesse. I think it's barely possible for East to hold KJx xxx J AJT98x.

I think it's better to play ♣Q at trick one. After East wins his ace, if he plays back a diamond, we can do something like spade finesse, ♠A, diamond to the 9. Or we might try ♣K, club, hoping that East has ♠8.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
