Fantunes?

Their 2-openings can be light in 3rd seat. Their 1-level openings can't AFAIK.

No, they don't either, so far as I know.

Maybe this depends on what is meant by "very light". I routinely open 4333 11-counts in third seat, but I do that in first seat too. I can't remember the last time I opened a 4333 10-count in 3rd seat, or had one opened by my partner. With a weakish unbalanced hand, I'll often open at the two- or three-level in third seat, including some hands that I'd open at the one-level in first.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I much prefer to open balanced 0-3 counts than 8-10 counts in third; but perhaps that is something I should not admit with so many TDs about...

Those who open light in 1st & 2nd have little need to do so in 3rd.

I can't see why this is relevant.

Opening light in 3rd seat has nothing to do with how light your pd could have opened in 1st seat, because the goal is not to find a game by opening light in 3rd seat. It is not systematical either. Two different same shape and same hcp hands in 3rd seat, one of them is opened other one is not by same player mostly depending on the suit quality. The purpose of opening light in 3rd seat is lead directing and ability to hold a hand that could have overcalled at 1 level (for majors) if RHO has opened excluding the bottom range of your 1 level overcalls. This criteria can be different for different pairs of course. Opening 1 minor definetely requires more than that for most of us plus ability to bail out by simply passing pds respond in majors especially.

In fact, knowing that your pd opens very light in 1st seat, and didn't open, and you holding a light hand, makes it even more vital to be able to show the lead or interfere with opps constructive free auction, if you have a hand available for that of course. I don't care how conservative or agressive my pd opens in first seat, i am opening 1 with AKJx xx xx xxxxx or AJTxx JTxx x Qxx in 3rd seat. I am aware with the 2nd hand some people prefer weak 2 but i don't like it for several reasons even without the side 4 card suit.

Applogize to the OP for going off the topic. I will shut my mouth :P

if you opened light wouldn't bidding a direct 2 show a light hand with 6+ and passing and pulling double to 2 be light with 5 and can scramble if need be.
isnt it pretty clear 2 will make with partner passed hand

There are two kinds of "opening light." For instance, I think whether you pass with a balanced 11 count in third seat or some 10 counts is largely dependant on how light you open in first seat as the main point of doing so is to avoid passing it out when you have a partial...you don't really want to risk that when you have 22 HCP between you. If you play Roth/Stone style where partner might even pass a 12 count then you would certainly open some hands in third seat that you wouldn't otherwise.

Opening hands like your examples, eg AKJx and out, is just a personal decision and not influenced by how sound you open in first seat though.
