Sometimes GIB can be extremely frustrating.

Here is one from an ACBL Robot Tournament:

My link

Having arrived at 3, at the point that GIB gains the lead all it has to do is to lead trump towards the QJx in dummy to assure 8 tricks against any distribution where 8 tricks are possible. Instead, after one round of trumps and two rounds of clubs, GIB tries to dispose of its club loser by running the diamonds. Running the diamonds "works" only when one of the opponents has 4 cards in both red suits, in which case GIB is doomed to go down at least 2 tricks even if it does successfully dispose of its club loser. Of course, what is far more likely is what happened here - the opps get to ruff a diamond and score 6 tricks for down 200.

Down 1 would have been a super result, as the opps can actually score 10 tricks in spades, but must be able to score at least 9 tricks in spades.

As I said, very frustrating.

You mean GIB doesn't know how to play bridge period- if only they make you declarer for all GIB games.
The problem with the opener is its too strong for a non-vulnerable opening- another stupid opening bid.

Is this just a function of thinking time? My home GIB seems to play this better, also joeydinky's "making contracts" thread further below. Aren't the tourney bots supposed to be advanced, and given reasonable thinking time?

Cloa, don't really understand why you participate in this forum just to take potshots at GIB, your posts aren't really constructive criticism just slamming it in general. If you hate it so much play vs. humans!

If you are doing MP vs Total Points/IMP, GIB does evaluate hand differently in the bidding process.
At MP, GIB chooses the contract that works most often.
At TP/IMP, it takes the one with the best avg TP score.

GIB does not consider scoring method in the play/defense yet, afaik, though that's probably coming...

I don't think this actually true, at least isn't true on my home GIB.
I gave it the hand:

and made South play 4h on the lead of cj to the ace and a diamond shift.

If set to MP scoring, GIB properly tries to take two spade hooks. If set to IMPs, it cashes out to make (it tries to get west to split honors / drop a spade honor under the ace first, prob not the best line to go for safe overtrick, but I had it on a relatively fast setting and maybe it would have done better had I set it slower).

So GIB does know about MP vs. IMP. I think what it is missing, according to old Ginsberg posts, is ability to analyze "field contract", when it is appropriate to make safety play to make being in a superior contract instead of always just trying to maximize expected # of tricks.

Would GIB have cashed out as declarer at IMPs (at Trick 11) to make his contract, rather than go for overtricks? This was matchpoints.
The play of the diamond suit gave me a headache, but that's a different subject...

yes could old bridge.exe in GIB does have an argument for mathpoints and imps
but the bastardized bbo version I dont think anyone knows what it has.

I would be happy if it just made normal leads and gave count and attitude.
