imps, short matches, intermediate opps
3/5 are our systemic leads

Always lead partner's s.... oh wait.

Opening leads are not my forte but I'll try the D4 (or should that be the 8), hoping to find partner short? Nothing else looks nice.

This is actually the crux of my question:

Partner knows that if I have a side void here, it's in clubs. Am I supposed to lead low to say "yes, lead a club" or am I supposed to lead the 8 to say "I have 6, so it's more likely that I have a club void" ?

My thought was that since I didn't lead a club, he'd figure it out regardless, so I led the 8. But I didn't know if I was right to do so.

I think you led the right card. Partner may or may not want to give you a club ruff, but the diamond count is very important for cashing out.

I went through exactly your thought process wyman, but decided the 8 was better. The 2 is more likely to fool partner into miscounting me for just 5 diamonds, and thus miscount the hand. There is no reason for a fancy 'alarm clock' here. I'm already not leading his suit. Just play the 8 and let partner think.

You didn't lead a club.

You didn't lead an honour from a sequence.

He'd have to have had his brain surgically removed not to work out that you are void in clubs, so the systemic count card in diamonds is clear, imo
