mp's, red vs white
No further opposition bidding, please try to bid these hands without letting partner's hand influence your bidding.

dbl* 2NT (gf)
3S 4S

*-strong hand
wtp ?

Imo 3C/3D/2S are weak/NF hands here. 2NT is strong hand with good spades and stopper and 3S is 7+spades, invite. We don't have any of those so we double and then partner with 8-9+pc forces to game and with 4-7 bids 2S/3C/3D

3c....showing a hand with extras

g/b 2nt, not natural, with a weaker hand.

I prefer not to x with a void, but this may be wrong.
I think Larry Cohen wrote something about this issue a few years ago but cant find the quote.

I just play double as takeout so I would probably bid X 2S 3S 4S

I like the prospects of doubling with say AQxxx x Axx KJxx but on the other hand I don't like the prospect of bidding on after 2S with say: AQJxx x AJx ATxx which I will probably have to do if partner bids 2S with OP hand.
This is why I think double should show extras so partner can GF with nice 8+ and accordingly he should GF with OP hand.
Thoughts ?

*** Further, what do you expect partner's 1NT reopen should be?
*** I agree on your suggested immediate action.

X 2 NT
3 4

I would not like to bid just 2 with the north hand, I have a fat maximum.
Kind Regards

I would have thought that a double was penalties. Does everyone now play it as takeout? Under what circumstances?

I would have thought penalties was the default assumption here, too. However, in answer to your questions:

1)Yes, everyone now plays all doubles as takeout

2) In the circumstances of either discussing otherwise nasty bidding problems or of answering questions on BBO forums....

I have the agreement, that "all doubles are take out". These are the exceptions: After after we found a fit, 1 NT x, , some artifical bids, many XX situations, ....

This situation is clearly not one of them, and I see no reason why it should be.
Kind Regards

Roland

Double as 2nd bid of opener is always t/o in modern bridge.
If you play wide range openings (11-21 etc.) then if you double with every hand with 16+hcp and reserve all other bids for shape'ish/competitive hands then you will not go wrong by much.
I like 2NT to be natural in those situations but some people like good/bad which takes some hands away from dbl but it costs a useful bid so you have to assess if the trade-off is worth it for you.

t/o of course. 2-2-(4-5)/2-1-5-5 o something and extras (which is nice 8hcp+)
