Since 10 card suits don't come up very often:

Dlr N, NS Vul, sitting W and after (P)-P-(1)-? you hold

void
T
Ax
KQJ98xxxxx

How many clubs do you want to bid? Do you want to X then bid lots of clubs? Or something devious? If it makes any difference to your thougts, opps are not the strongest, but that is by the standards of the room as a whole (which is quite strong).

Spoiler

"Pass is your friend" - my brother in law - who likes to bid a lot.

at imps I would be unwilling to sit for a small slam s i would just bid 7c right away. While it is true that
every once in a while we will go -500 vs a partial I'll pay off to that in exchange for not losing out to any
slams over the long haul. It is also remotely possible neither opp will feel safe x 7c and we play undoubled
or (can it be ) making. Its MP however and we can reap huge benefits for merely making it diffcult for the
opps to gauge how high they want to go. IMO the MP bid is

5c.

Then leave the opps alone and see how well you have done.

5 for me also.

As an aside, I've held 3 10 card suits in my time, 10,3, 10,2,1 and 10,1,1,1, reached the right contract on all of them and got lousy scores on all of them. Sometimes just getting in first and making opps guess beats science.

Wasn't there a case at a major event a few years back where West opened a 0+ 1 and North doubled with 9 diamonds?

5 for me. I usually count on pard for 1 helping card when bidding.

If you double or bid a lesser number of , the opponents may have room to find out more about their hands and compete.

Let them guess at the 5 level.

Not nearly as often as threads with 10 card suits.

Double is an interesting psyche since 1N is as overplayed as Taylor Swift's "Love Story". Some number of clubs would be way too obvious.

Yeah, they won't get the sublime and nuanced brilliance of double. Better not try it then.

I chose a simple 5C, which made +1 when both black aces were in partner's hand. At the time the board came to us, the only other result was 6Cx making. P suggested if I had Xed then bid 5C he would have raised to 6 - fair comment in itself, but 5C+1 turned out in the end to be better than average as most N/S pairs found 5M making 10 or 11 tricks.

Maybe a better strategy is to overcall 2. Before your LHO bids, feign surprise at RHO's opening bid, and correct it to 5. Sure, partner is barred, but your director won't know that.
