Double keeps 2♥X and 2♠ open and if partner bids 3♦, that may actually be the best spot. But certainly we will play some hands in 3♦ that would have been better in 3♣.

Partner will not bid 3 diamonds without 5 of them, so I am confident that this approach will work more often then 3 ♣.

Someone -- I want to say Marvin French -- made up a rule for this situation:

"Reopen with a double, unless you have a hand that would have pulled a penalty double by partner."

Double, assuming a reasonable partner, and agreements about how to scramble with both minors.

Not only might partner have a trap pass, but the clubs aren't good as well. Nor the spades in case partner has to go back to that suit. This is just not an offensive enough hand to force partner to play in one of my suits on the 3 level whether he wants to or not.

Double. The stiff ♥ A and lack of a raise by advancer increases the likelihood that pard has made a penalty pass.

I would double.

However, I think Justin is being overly optimistic when he suggests a 20% chance of a conversion. We hold the heart A, and most opps will hold decent texture and/or a 6 card suit when they make a 2/1 overcall, so I think it unlikely that partner has the hearts to sit for a double, when our classic holding for the double is x or xx.

Having said that, 3♣ is a big bid. I'd rather play 2♠ opposite a typical 5 - 7 count 2=4=4=3 hand.

And we may land on our feet if he bids 3♦ (tho I'd be more comfortable if I knew that we didn't play a 2♦ opener as a weak two). Plus the small chance that he has a penalty pass tips the scales on what would otherwise be a close decision.

I don't think RHO's pass means much here. The fact that he lacks a heart raise really says very little about partner's holding a penalty pass when we're looking at our values.
