Has anyone ever managed to deliberately produce a stripey-tailed ape double? Intentionally, not just a hand where you messed up but managed to recover by your team-mates bidding the slam at the other table?

I like how you say that like everyone should know what it means. :)

I am guessing here, but you mean go down 1100 as an intentional sac against a slam?

It's a double of a game when they have a slam.

The term is called the "stripe-tailed ape double". The idea is that if the opponents are trying for slam, and you are fairly certain that they are going to bid and make it, but one of them has bid 5 of their suit along the way (blkwood response, or as a slam try), you double them, because 5 doubled + an overtrick (even 2 overtricks) scores less than a slam. But if they redouble, you "run like a stripe-tailed ape" to your suit and hope the sacrifice goes for less. Redoubled making with an overtrick outscores the slam.

Ah, I've heard of that.

A rather fine line though, finding yourself in the situation with opponents competent enough to bid and make it but not competent enough to redouble you.

Never seen one tried or pulled off, but I have seen the opposite I suppose. Does this one have a name? Searching that link as we speak...lol

When you double the opponents in a poor contract, and they redouble, then you or partner thinks it over and pulls to a hopeless contract. Derp...

I've only heard of 1 intentional one. I was listening in on a pair's post mortem and on one board, this guy's partner opened 2H, got a 3N overcall and he doubled with xxxxx Jxxx x xxx. That ended +3 for 850 (nv) when the opponents were cold for slam in 3 strains.

A perfect example. I hope it paid off for them.
