All vul, matchpoints. Partner opens 1 in third seat and RHO overcalls 1.

You hold Jxx xx KJT9x Kxx.

If you think the choice is not close, please post a hand or hands that would be close.

Other.
I have a 7-10 xfer to 2D.
Only bidding again if partner shows big.

I think it best to act now, pass is mostly a losing strategy IMO.
I don't have the values to bid 2, so I must choose btw X and 1NT.
Both come with the obvious risk, but I think X offers better options for partner to compete effectively. If it goes 2 on my left back to me I will X again, and pull 3 to 3

Now I'll wait to see what the experts have to say :)

Two Diamonds seems obvious to me. If I had a sixth diamond, I would have opened 2D. If I had 11 HCP, I would have opened 1D. I must have a landing zone with only five diamonds. Hence, 2D shows 5D/2H with 8-10 HCP, which is what I have. Amazing!

As a passed hand 2D feels clear. Unpassed, I would be unhappy with both pass and X but probably talk myself into the double.

When I voted I missed that we were a passed hand. As a passed hand I would bid 2D, although it is somewhat close. I would never bid 2D as an unpassed hand and would have doubled. The hand is not perfect for a double but it seems much better than pass. If partner has opened, we have an 8-count and there is a decent opportunity to show values, it seems like we should take that opportunity.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

X. 2 on a balanced hand with a terrible spade holding is ugly. 9 doesn't change that. X keeps good options open, for instance 1NT.

2 with this suit and hand.

Jxx xx KJ97x Kxx

Now the best action would be less clear.

Double, to keep 1NT in the picture.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Double. Remove 2C to 2H, not 2D (same as if they didn't act and I had responded 1N). If a spade raise comes back to me, I Pass. Even if Partner were not a 3rd chair opener, doing a 2nd thing would not be a good idea when opener doesn't do a 2nd thing.

The fact that we are a passed hand, and thus 2D direct over 1S is weaker, doesn't mean we can do it with this collection.

To me the choice would depend on my opening bid structure.

If I have a weak two in diamonds avaiable, I can bid 2 now, which should show this kind of heart tolerance.
If I don't have a w2, I would double now and convert 2 clubs to 2 .
Kind Regards

Roland

At matchpoints I would try 1NT, or double, 2 didnt even cross my mind here.
Jxx is not perfect, but I think 1NT is likely to be the playable spot and partner will not be happy to bid it with Qx, he will be more inclined to bid any 4 card minor.
If partner rebids hearts or a I would be happy to play 2.

2 as i am a passed hand is not unreasonable, however X is a superior call.

I am willing to bid 1nt to show 8-10p with balanced hand, even though my three card S suit without exact S stopper, then opener would rebid if with unbalanced hand,he can pass if with balanced hand,so it is not necessary to consider this hand complicated.
