Hello,

Just a topic regarding 2245 or (13)45 distributions lacking values to reverse. In your partnership/opinion, what is the best way to handle rebidding issues with these? Do you prefer having 1-1M-2 promising 5/4 in minors or 6+, or adjusting the minor openings to allow for bidding 1 w/ 4+5? Do you have other methods to get this across?

Which method(s) have you had the best experiences with? Personally I find it easiest to promise 5 playing a 2 carded opening.

Try to rebid or open 1NT if feasible.

With most partners I:
1) Open 1 in most all cases
2) Raise to 2M with a 3-card fit in M (we play fit-asks to check back)
3) Rebid 2 on all hands no fitting M, except,
4) Rebid 1 over 1 on 3 (HJx+) with appropriate 13-15 hand (or 1N with [x / Hxx] Hxxx HHxxx over 1M - singleton in M)
My 1-1N-2 rebid strongly implies 6. Exception would be say 987, 3, Qxxx, AKQJx (rare).
Be the partner you want to play with.

Assuming I'm not playing strong club, I open these 1C and rebid 1NT routinely. Of course if I am (13)45 and partner bids my 3-card major I raise.

My 1m...2m sequence is virtually always a six card suit.

I don't have a set way of dealing with those, except the 2-2-4-5 pattern, which I automatically call balanced, and open/rebid 1N as appropriate.

If I am 3=1=4=5 with chunky spades or clubs, I will typically open 1, planning to rebid 1 with a good 3 card spade suit, or 2 with a good 5 card club suit over a 1 response. Over a 1 response I will raise spades. If I have a stiff honor in hearts, I might rebid 1N, but I won't respect myself in the morning (I hate rebidding 1N with a stiff even though its sometimes necessary). Otherwise, I'll open it 1 as a last resort.

If I am 1=3=4=5, I will open 1 when I have a stiff honor in spades, or when I have good chunky clubs, planning on rebidding 1N/2 over 1. Otherwise I will open 1 planning on rebidding 2.

If I am 1=4=5=3, then I will plan on opening 1 and rebidding 2 or 2 over 1 as my default position.

Another note - If I have an awkward hand type, then I will not stretch to open 11 & 12 counts; those I will pass & await developments, hoping I have a better idea of what to do later.

A big YEP to that. These crummy openers with rebid problems often become excellent responding hands.

I roll the dice on 1 or 1 with 2-2-4-5 but with say, 3-1-4-5 after pard responds 1 I'm prone to bidding 1.

I'm allergic to bidding 1nt with a stiff and read that Meckwell came up with support doubles because they were getting to too many 3-3 trump fits doing this, also responding 1 to a 1 opener with 3-1-4-5 when they thought it was called for.

Whether it has been blowing off the lead or getting to a 4-3 spade fit (they always seem to play like a dream) it's been working much more often than not and I've responded 1 to a 1 opener with 1-3 whatever with good results too.
