SO this hand is a variation on a defence problem from a Hugh kelsey book. The idea is to work out whether, if everyone takes their best single dummy play, whether declarer (south) or the defenders will prevail. South plays 3N at imps after opening a 12-14 NT. west leads the heart J, and continues, north winning the K and east unblocking.

After looking at this single dummy, I tried double dummy. I don't understand the issue. If declarer just plays to finesse diamonds, he's guaranteed no works than 2 club losers, 1 heart loser and a diamond loser to make. It seems the right way to continue at matchpoints too as there seems no better way to get 10 top tricks.

I now look at the spoiler, and had already considered that. I do not understand how declarer could fail to come home with

4 spades, 2 hearts, and 3 or 4 diamonds (depending on the finesse).

If it's matchpoints, then perhaps there is a way that declarer gets greedy, but I do not see it.

i choose the offense----------single dummy or double dummy the hand plays
the same for anywhere from 9 to 11 tricks depending on the location of
dia K and club A/Q.

we always have NO MATTER THE LOCATION OF OPPS CARDS
4 spades 3 diamonds and 2 hearts as long as we set up our diamond
winners starting with trick 3. The way the hand is set up double dummy
we will lose to the dia K also and score ten tricks when the club finesse
works (we accompish this by running the spades first then diamonds
before taking the club finesse)

if the dia K and club Q are onside we can score 11 tricks via 4 dia
4spa 2h and 1c (losing only 1 heart (trick 1) and club A).

I gave the hand one too many spade tricks, have changed it now. SOrry.
