No-one vulnerable, RHO (dealer) opens 1, 2 from LHO, which is passed back to you.

You hold :

HAND A
2
7643
KJT43
A94

HAND B
2
764
KJT43
A943

Pass quietly, double or bid 3D? (Or 2NT with Hand B?)

Is your decision at all affected when you know that your opponents are one of the weakest pairs in the room?

I double on the first one, and I bid 2NT on the second one. I'm even more likely to push against bad opponents, they're less likely to double me for penalties, and more likely to compete to 3S.

Yeh, a couple of doubles feel right (one with A, one with B). With the second one, I prefer the 4-3 heart fit with short spades in the short heart hand to the 3-4 club fit being tapped. My balancing 2NT will not get us to diamonds when partner is 4=3=3=3, but the double will --when partner scrambles with 2NT.

Normally, I'd reserve a reopening double for a hand of about opening value. But in this auction, I've already had the chance to make a takeout double and haven't done so. So partner is likely to understand I have less than that. Even so, 8 points is even a little light, so I'd want near perfect hand pattern for it.

Hand A comes close -- it has 4 s which partner will expect, so I would double with it.

Hand B isn't as close. If partner will take 2 NT as the minors, then that would be the bid. If not, I'd simply bid 3 .
