Should East-West have done better?

How can East possibly know that his hand is useful? All his partner showed was long strong spades. As far as he knows, KJxxxx of diamonds were just digital pieces of paper. Opposite ATxx, they were gold. But W never clued him in by raising diamonds.

On the other hand, West should just shoot out 4 once partner bids diamonds freely, given that he has 10 tricks opposite Kxxxxx of diamonds and one more trick (assuming that the spades can be played for no worse than one loser). It turns out that the trick is the singleton club with 2 small spades.
