Double dummy, i want to be in 3nt by west, play would be same double dummy at notrump for the same 9 tricks (10 if north makes a mistake).

trick one, WIN SPADE ACE,
trick 2-6 win five rounds of clubs. Line diverge.....

if north throws two diamonds,
trick 7 diamond king... i that wins... continue diamonds... plan it to unblock high two hearts in dummy when hearts are played. makes 10 tricks.

Trick 7 diamond king. north wins and ... continues two rounds of diamonds,
trick 8. follow suit.
trick 9 throw !s away on last diamond. Give up two hearts to north to make.

Trick 7 diamond king, north wins, cashes 2nd diamond, and exits any heart. WE win two hearts, exit a high heart (any heart will do) as a steppingstone to the diamond jack.

iF NORTH throws one diamonds and one heart on the five clubs...Still play the same line from trick 7.
These lines give you 6 black tricks, plus two hearts plus one diamond. Have to say, not very interesting unless something really clever is hidden here.

Cant I just win spade ace play three rounds of clubs and play the diamond K from hand? How can he prevent me scoring two hearts and a diamond to go with 6 black suit tricks? Once I have a diamond trick in the bag, its easy as pie to come to an extra trick either via the stepping stone squeeze or a simple endplay.

Obv ben is right you have to play a fourth club squeezing them out of a diamond (if they pitch a heart, clear hearts). Once they have been squeezed out of a diamond they are dead. If you play the DK before doing that then they can just clear diamonds and have 2 diamond winners and you are dead.

yeah I'm a noob I overlooked running the clubs. This would be more interesting as a single dummy play problem, it was a hand from the international fund game, frank stewart gave a blase kind of "west should make 3c on careful play" and I thought it was an awfully bold claim.
